It really is amazing to see proper games getting released on the PS2 this late in it's lifetime. Sure, this has been out in Japan for quite some time, but from what I gather it has required pretty extensive localisation.

The Homebrew Channel has launched!
The Wii homebrew killer app we have all been waiting for has finally launched for public use, The Homebrew Channel Beta 7.
From the team:
"The Homebrew Channel is a channel for launching Wii homebrew applications without the need to run the Twilight Hack first. It will list apps stored and organised on an SD card in a nice little GUI, which you can very easily customise with descriptions and shiny little .png icons all by yourself if you want. You can also launch homebrew apps via TCP (with a correctly configured PC) or USB Gecko. Both of those built in options make it extremely convenient for testing out new code, as well as a general purpose homebrew launcher."
It can install as a .elf via the Twilight Hack, or if you can boot games from a disc, you can burn it as an .iso

This is how a digital download service should be implemented. I love steam, but it is not without it's flaws.
This is completely DRM free. You can redownload your games indefinitely, purchasing one license gives you access to the PC, Mac, and Linux versions should you so wish, and most importantly, they are not price gouging based on region whatsoever.

I seem to be on the receiving end of a lot of unpleasant comments spam. I had hoped to keep my comments sections completely open and anonymous, should individuals so chose, for as long as possible, but it looks like that is no longer the case.
I think the best alternative that blogger will allow me is to have it so that anyone with a google or OpenID account can post comments, but if someone wished to remain anonymous, it will have to go through moderation. This means that if, for any reason (that is none of my business) you want to remain anonymous, or can't be arsed to get a google account or whatever, then you can still post comments, there will just be a delay between when you send it and when it gets published.

As I said on the Wii post, I've got this, got it for pretty cheap around launch, and can't recommend it enough.
It comes with a version of 'Retro Evolved', the XBLA/PC version of Geometry wars, but the meat of the game if the fantastic Galaxies section, which features a whole host of levels which all mix up the rules, and some RPG light elements.
It's a must own at a tenner.

Last month an early version of Gecko Region free homebrew app was released for the Wii, and and updated version has just been released.
This recent build has improved compatibility, so Smash Brothers Brawl now works, has support for progressive scan, and online play for games should work too.

Battle of the Bands is a rarity in today’s gaming world: a music/rhythm game that does not require some type of peripheral like a guitar, microphone, dance pad or electric tuba. Played solely with the Wii Remote, Battle of the Bands simplifies the genre by requiring only simple gestures in your attempt to destroy your opponent. But does Battle of the Bands win the battle for your cash?
The gameplay at the heart of Battle of the Bands is simple – a series of directional arrows runs along the screen similar to Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Swipe the remote in the direction shown at the correct time and you get points; get more points than your opponent by the end of the song and you win. During the battle, if you get enough notes in a row you can launch attacks at your opponent. Of course, your opponent can do the same so you must watch for attacks and block them before they hit your side of the screen.
Sounds simple, right? Unfortunately no – the controls of Battle of the Bands are actually its biggest weakness. The game is the victim of some very spotty movement recognition. Often you wave in one direction and the system seems completely impervious to your attempts to actually play the game. It’s frankly amazing that other games can sense the slightly movement with pinpoint accuracy but this title can’t get the basic four movements of up, down, left and right to register reliably. By playing long enough, you may find some adjustments will improve the recognition – small sharp movements seem to work best – but in a game where you are judged solely on accuracy it’s a huge obstacle to overcome.
Battle of the Bands almost manages to overcome its control weakness by having a brilliant soundtrack. Each of the game’s songs is presented in five musical styles – country, marching band and rock to name a few. The first time you hear the country-fried version of 'Man of Constant Sorrow' or the marching band starts playing 'Insane in the Brain' you will come very close to forgetting the wonky controls. Including a music player that allows you to switch genres at will was a very nice move and you may find yourself playing with that as much as the actual game itself.
Graphically, what the game lacks in polygon count it makes up for in style. The character designs are easily the visual highlight of the game. Characters would fit right in with PC classic Grim Fandango or the DS’s Touch Detective. They are clever and stylized and due to the large number of genres, nicely varied as well. Unfortunately, the great characters are weakened by some unpolished menus and the still shots of the characters that accompany the banter prior to battles are nothing short of painful.
If you frequent this site, it seems a safe assumption that you are a frugal gamer, one who thinks long and hard about each purchase, especially those at full retail price. At a full retail price Battle of the Bands would be very hard to recommend. While the music is amazing and the style is wonderful they just can’t overcome the flawed gameplay. However, at the low price of £17, fans of the music/rhythm genre should really consider picking this one up as the genre bending music really is something unique, that deserves to be experienced.

Check this video out, and be amazed at how quickly the collective hard work of a bunch of really talented bedroom programmers have put together a fantastic solution for Wii homebrew:
It looks slick as hell, certainly on par with a lot of commercial software, and it's still in beta.
I can't wait for the public release.
All these applications are being loaded of an SD card, and the channel also has support for loading software from a USBGecko or even TCP/IP (which you actually see in action when linux is loaded).
For those interested in the technical details, this channel is powered by devkitPPC/libOGC.
I will be posting, with impressions, as soon as it is publicly released.
New Free NIN album
Regular readers will probably have picked up on how much of a Nine Inch Nails fan I am. Trent Reznor (the man behind NIN) seems to be spearheading the free music revolution. Their last album "Ghosts", was an experimental instrumental album, in four parts. The first part was completely free, and the rest was only $5 to download, as well as being available in a range of physical formats. He's gone one step further now.
As of today, their new album "The Slip" is available in a range of DRM free formats, completely free of charge. If you've never listened to them before, now is a great time to start.
The production is fantastic, and it is better than the vast majority of music for sale right now. The really cool thing about this is that by taking the record label out of the equation, not only is music getting cheaper, we are also getting more of it, this is the first time we have ever had 2 albums from NIN in the same year.

This was a real guilty pleasure of mine on the Xbox. I've not even seen the film but I had a lot of fun with this game. It felt like a streamlined version of GTA, in fact, a lot of the cool new features from GTA4 were in this game first. From what I hear the Wii controls are great too. I didn't realise at the time, but this is from the same developer as Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and they really know how to make open world games. The graphics and music are fantastic too. Don't forget that if you have an HMV student card, you can use it online too, bringing this down to £13.49.
