2 for £14.99 in store at GAME

GAME appear to have added some new games to their 2 for £14.99 PC range in store.

The offer now includes:
Bioshock
Unreal Tournament 3
The Lord Of The Rings Online: Shadows Of Angmar
Tomb Raider: Anniversary
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadows of Chernobyl
Diablo 2
and others

When we saw it, there was also a copy of Bioshock in the 2 for £24.99 range, so it may just have been miss-stickered, in which case, it might not be available for 2 for 2 for £14.99 elsewhere, let me know how it goes.

Pretty much all of these are £10 or more elsewhere, so this is a pretty good deal.

Deadly Creatures, Wii - Review

Deadly Creatures, Wii - £22.91 delivered

Review by The Rev Owen

Deadly Creatures, a third person action game in which you take control of a tarantula and a scorpion in the American desert, has been a difficult game to play through for review. Not because it's particularly hard. Not because it's a terrible game I couldn't face playing. No, it was hard to play because it completely terrified my wife, so I couldn't play it while she was awake. She's fine with zombies, monsters and aliens trying to eat my face off while she sits beside me knitting and tweeting, but put me in control of a tarantula and she can't even look at the screen.

You could make a strong case, then, for Deadly Creatures being the scariest game of all time, given that there are more people around terrified of spiders than there are terrified of zombies. Which doesn't seem right to me, but there you go. I'm not a huge fan of spiders, but I'm not especially scared of them, so I was able to play through the game without any trouble on that front.

So, if you're an arachnophobe, you should steer clear of this game. If you're not? Should you pick up this game? Well, the answer to that is slightly complicated, but the short version is "no". It's not that Deadly Creatures is an especially bad game. It's a pretty average game, really, enlivened somewhat by the unusual setting and the presence of Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Hopper, who pop up now and again during the game as a pair of treasure hunters and who are by far the best thing about the game.

For the most of the time I spent with the game, I was thinking of giving it a very cautious recommendation as a rental. There aren't really any problems with the game, for the most part, apart from the camera, which is usually fine, but prone to the odd spasm in tight areas. The motion controls work and, with the exception of the scorpion's grass-slashing strike, aren't overused or annoying. The game just works and, if it doesn't set its sights too high, at least it doesn't overreach itself.

However... this all changed at the end of the game. The final boss is a terrible piece of work showing off all the problems with the camera and control system. It's glitchy, relies far too much on luck, the boss can hit you multiple times without you being able to recover and at the very end of the fight the instructions lie to you.

If you finally persevere through this to win the fight - and I only did because I thought I should finish the game before reviewing it - the game ends rather abruptly, after only about four and a half hours, shows you some jerky, unskippable credits and then unceremoniously dumps you back to the level select menu.

You can play through the game again, you can view some concept art galleries (which, incidentally, are far nicer and more colourful than the game's actual graphics) and that's your lot. It's definitely not worth buying and is barely worth a rental. An unfortunate disappointment.

Age of Empires: Mythologies, DS - Review

Age of Empires: Mythologies, DS - £23.73 delivered

Review by The Rev Owen

Some games are the worst kind of supermodel, beautiful but empty. Some are aging drunken actors, full of charisma, but stumbling and incoherent. Some are great scientists, brilliant, peerless but impossible to understand. Some are snake-oil salesmen, promising the world but delivering nothing.

Age of Empires: Mythologies for the Nintendo DS is your friend James. He works in IT, is in a long-term relationship with a plain, unremarkable girl and is pleasant company down the pub. He's just not going to stumble in with a bottle of red wine in one hand, a pair of handcuffs in another and regale you with tales of amazing adventure in Eastern Europe.

This is because James, despite being a nice enough chap, is fundamentally quite dull. He does what he does well - he works hard, always buys his round and treats his girlfriend well - but he's not very exciting.

Crucially, however, this isn't actually a bad thing. If all your friends were half-crazed thrill-seekers then you'd never get any sleep, would catch some horrible disease and then you'd die in the passenger seat of an Italian sports car after failing to make an awesome jump over the Danube.

No, you need James. You need someone calm, orderly and trustworthy. And in amongst your quick arcade racing thrills, epic RPGs and super-detailed kill-o-thons you need something like Age of Empires: Mythologies.

I say "something like" Age of Empires: Mythologies, because it fits neatly next to Advance Wars on the shelf, but isn't quite as good. Which, in itself, is high praise indeed. Being nearly as good as Advance Wars is like being nearly as cute as a box of kittens, or nearly as big as the universe. It's an impressive achievement, but the fact remains - Advance Wars is better. Advance Wars is also less complicated, so Age of Empires isn't even a good introduction to the turn-based strategy genre. (Age of Empires has a very interesting double-layer to its traditional rock-paper-scissors mechanics, which soon becomes second nature, but always keeps things interesting.) Its target market is people who have finished Advance Wars and want more, or people who aren't interested in modern warfare and want a game based on old mythologies. Or, indeed, people who think Advance Wars is too cute-looking and want something that looks more like an old PC game.

Which is where Age of Empires first problem lies. The graphics do an excellent job of evoking the feeling of old PC strategy games, back in the days when graphics were 2D and you could play them without investing in a platinum-plated, champagne-cooled graphics card. It's a nice look, designed to be familiar to players of the real-time PC games on which this turn-based spinoff is based. Unfortunately, the graphics aren't quite clear enough. They're fine alone, but get a few units bunched up together and it can be hard to see what's going on. It's not a major problem, as you can get all the information you need simply by moving the cursor around and glancing up at the wonderfully-informative top screen, but it does make it difficult to tell what's going on at a glance.

Age of Empires has another annoying problem, too. The AI isn't great, making strange moves and having to cheat to put up a fight. That's pretty standard for this type of game, though, and not a major failing in my eyes. The really annoying thing is that the AI doesn't concede. In some of the longer campaign missions, you can spend over half an hour slogging through the enemy's base to kill everything. It's clear you've won the mission, that you're too strong to be stopped and the enemy is too weak to fight back, but it'll keep trying to fight you, anyway. When you finally beat one of those missions, you slump your shoulders, wait for the auto save message and then turn off the DS in relief.

Then, five minutes later, you turn the DS back on. Fundamentally, you see, Age of Empires is a very good game. Sure, it's not glamorous, sure it's a bit dull at times, but it's a fundamentally good game - and there's an awful lot of it. Multiple civilizations with multiple gods to choose from (all of which effect your strategy and play style more than you'd think), a long series of campaigns, extra missions in the Scenario mode, a Skirmish mode, lots of extra maps, gods and trinkets to unlock by gaining special "achievements" while playing and, of course multiplayer, which can be played with one DS, two DSs with one cart, two DSs with multiple carts and online. Phew. (Though, it should be noted, I didn't actually find anyone online when I tried to play.) It's a packed little cart, that's for sure.

This isn't a game that will change your life. It's not a game that you'll evangelize about to friends and strangers. It's probably not even a game you'll remember in ten years time when you're getting all nostalgic for the days of the DS.

It's a good, solid, interesting game, great value for money and recommended to anyone interested in a turn-based strategy game for their DS - if they've already tried Advance Wars.

Shopto pre-order policy change

Shopto pretty much came from nowhere to be one of my favorite video game retailers. They have pretty great prices for the most part, and they tend to get you your games pretty fast.

They have just made a change in policy regarding pre-orders, which is a bold move, and I would love to see other retailers follow suit.

Steam serials from other places

I heard about this a few days ago, but wanted to check it out before I posted it.

G2Play are a Polish games retailer. They are currently selling serial numbers, which I believe are gutted from retail copies, online.

Essentially, buying a serial from them is legally acquiring a serial from Valve, it just it is cheaper for them to not ship you the box, and let you download it from Steam.

At the moment, The Orange Box and Left 4 Dead are very cheap there (especially the latter), and the end result is the same as buying it digitally on Steam, except cheaper (and on your steam record, it will say you have a retail version).

I can't see any reason not to use them, I've heard lots of positive reports. If anyone wants to take the plunge, let me know how it goes.

The Orange Box, PC - £10.11
Left 4 Dead, PC - £10.11

Note: because of how they calculate currency, it is cheapest if you put it in dollars. Saves like 50 cents.

Also I converted the price into GBP and it hardly changed...

Dawn of War 2, PC

Apparently THQ thought that the best way to sell this game to their customers is by accepting money hats from 4 of the big retailers, who in exchange get exclusive DLC. This is not by any means a new practice, but I can't remember seeing it happen on this scale before.

These 4 retailers have decided that the best thing for them to do, instead of competing on price, is to compete on who has the shiniest bits of tinsel stapled awkwardly to the game's front cover. They hope to use exclusive DLC to distract you from the fact that they are charging you more than other retailers for the same product.

There are two situations that exclusive DLC amounts too.
1. An insignificant addition to the game, simple cosmetic changes maybe (like with Dawn of War 2)
2. A significant game changing addition, that either adds new mechanics, or new gameplay content.

Bear in mind that this stuff cannot just be bought, if you buy the game from a retailer not offering exclusive DLC, you cannot then choose to pay for it afterwards. So, there are two possibilities, either people are overpaying for bad DLC (and having to make the decision to do so before even playing the game), or a large proportion of the customers are not getting the entirety of the game they are paying for.

The four retailers with exclusive DLC are charging £22.99 - £24.99 for the standard edition + exclusive DLC, and oddly enough two of them are selling the standard edition and the special edition for the same price. The game can be got for £21.72 from a retailer which does not have a 'exclusive promotion' with THQ. In effect the exclusive DLC costs £1.37-3.37, which I guess isn't really a big amount, but it's more than the 200 Microsoft Points Bethesda wanted for their horse armour, and it amounts to the same thing.

When a publisher accepts a money hat from a retailer, they indirectly pass the cost of it onto the customers.

My advice? Pretty much what I always say - Buy the game from whoever is selling it for the cheapest, and as of right now, that is BlahDVD for the regular edition, and GAME for the special edition (the same value as the regular edition according to them).

Dawn of War 2, PC - £21.72 delivered

Dawn of War 2 [Special Edition], PC
- £24.99 delivered

I am pretty sure gamers as a whole would be better off if how successful games retailers and publishers were was not determined by how much and how successful they market, but how honest and open their pricing models are, and then genuinely competing with each other.

I guess you could always just buy it direct from the publisher for £43.90.

Not played PGR4 myself, but I know it came out at a time when there were several other high profile racing games available on the 360. Sega Superstar tennis is a lot of fun too. It is a bit arduous unlocking everything, but if you grew up with a sega controller in your hands like me, you'll probably get a kick out of all the Sega stuff. The best prices I can find for them separately are £15.99 for PGR4 and £11.99 for Sega Superstar Tennis, so it's definitely worth going for the bundle of both.

Chrono Trigger, DS - £23.73

Chrono Trigger, DS - £23.73 delivered

A pretty historic release. Chrono Trigger is certainly one of the greatest RPGs ever to come from Japan. It's been nearly 14 years since it first came out on the SNES, but despite its age it is still more forward thinking than many RPGs released today. This is the first time it has ever been released in the UK, both the original and the Playstation port never got a release here, and although Play.com did have it at a pre-order price of £14.99 for a while, the best price on it now is £23.73 from the hut.

Goozex has now launched in the UK - Free game!

Goozex is an online game trading service that has been hugely popular with gamers in the USA for a while now, and it has just launched in the UK.

You essentially swap games for points, it's like a cross between eBay and trading in games at a games shop. They take a much smaller cut of each transaction than the likes of GAME and Gamestation, and make it really easy to find games you want. You also get 100 free points just for signing up, which can either go towards a game, or even get you one for completely free.

It' not got a huge selection right now, but if it is anything like the USA version, it will fill up real fast.

Check it out here.

There are literally dozens of great games for 100 points available right now. Something for everyone.

Update: I've made a search plugin for it. Check it out here. Also, feel free to add me as a friend.
